5 Last-Minute DIY Gifts for Mother’s Day

by Michael Webster

Mother’s Day is officially less than a week away and you’re probably thinking: “What do I get for the mom who seems to have everything, with only a couple of days left to find it?” Believe it or not, your mom doesn’t want an expensive gift or something flashy to simply say you remembered her holiday. She would much prefer something from the heart, and nothing says you care more than a do-it-yourself (DIY) project that mom can enjoy for years to come. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, and time running low, here are 5 of our best last-minute DIY gift ideas that are sure to make her day even more special.

1. Candles

Let’s be honest – just about every mom loves candles. No matter how many they continue to stack up in the cupboard, moms love to display candles year-round in almost every area of the house, and Mother’s Day is no exception. One fairly easy DIY gift idea that will be sure to light your mom’s day up this year is a homemade candle. Anyone can go out and buy a candle (which isn’t a bad thing), but crafting your own will certainly show off how much effort you put into her gift, plus she’ll be able to display it for everyone to see.

All you’ll need to get started is:

  • Wax
  • Wicks
  • Container (anything glass will work best – even old candles!)
  • Skewers or Popsicle sticks

Once you have your materials together, place a wick into the container you plan to pour the wax into, and then place a pot over your range’s least powerful burner, or a simmer burner, to begin melting the wax. For a creative touch, you can add mom’s favorite color and fragrance to the wax while it melts to make it even more personalized. Now that the wax has melted, carefully pour it into the container and use either skewers or popsicle sticks to help keep the wick in place. Let the wax cool completely, then you can start trimming the wick down to the appropriate size (if needed) and ta-da! Your personal, homemade candle for mom is ready-to-go for Mother’s Day and took less than 30 minutes to make.

2. Homemade Potpourri

If making candles isn’t quite your thing, don’t sweat it! There are several other easy and creative DIY projects you can accomplish in a quick amount of time for mom with very little materials.

One thing mom would appreciate just as much as a physical gift and will really set the mood for the day is homemade potpourri. Potpourri is super easy to put together and will make the entire house smell amazing throughout the day. All you’ll need is:

  • 1 orange – or any form of citrus
  • At least 3 sticks of cinnamon
  • 1 tbs of whole cloves
  • Cranberries or flower petals (optional)

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients of choice, grab a small saucepan and begin to add them together. After all the ingredients are in the pan, fill it up with water and set the burner to the lowest setting. (If your range has a simmer burner, now is the perfect time to use it!) Stir the ingredients together until they begin to simmer, while adding water as necessary, and your homemade potpourri is officially done and ready for mom’s big day!

3. Coffee Mug Holder

If mom is an avid coffee or tea drinker, chances are she has a good amount of mugs taking up space in the kitchen. If you have a little extra time to put towards your DIY project for mom this year, support her collection by displaying them on a customized, one-of-one mug holder. This project will definitely require some elbow grease, but you’ll be shocked at how quickly you can get it done; plus, you’ll be making a keepsake for mom that she’ll cherish for years. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A wooden board – size is totally up to you!
  • Screwdriver or electric drill
  • Hooks (one for each mug you want to display)
  • Nails and hanging hardware (anchors/screws)

After you collect your building materials, decide where to hang the mug holder, and make sure the dimensions are correct. Once you’ve decided on the spot, screw in the hanging hardware on the backside of the wooden board to keep it stable.

After you wrap that up, it’s time to install the hooks on the front of the board to hold the mugs. You can use as many hooks as you want, just as long as there’s enough space for the mugs to hang.

Once the hooks are installed and spaced out, you’ll officially have a one-of-a-kind mug holder that mom will be able to use on her special day and for years to come! You can give it an extra-special touch by painting it mom’s favorite color and engraving a thoughtful note or phrase on the front so that whenever she grabs a mug, she’ll think of you.

4. Lavender Bath Salts

Being a mom is perhaps the hardest job on the planet. With work, caring for her young ones, and various other life responsibilities, it’s almost impossible to sneak in any type of self-care. This year for Mother’s Day, give your mom a head start to relaxation by making her some homemade lavender bath salts to soak in at the end of those long days. Using lavender is a fantastic way for mom to wind down at the end of the day, plus you’ll have this great DIY gift ready to go in less than five minutes once you have your materials.

All you’ll need is:

  • Epsom salt
  • Lavender tea
  • A jar
  • Lavender essential oil (optional)

Once you have everything ready, pour all the ingredients into the jar and shake it up – and that’s it. In fewer than five minutes, you’ll have a unique and truly thoughtful gift ready to pamper mom on her special day.
